Coleman, et al. v. Exxon Chemical Co.

Dwight Steward was retained to provide a critique and rebuttal to the plantiffs’ experts in a multi-plaintiff employment discrimination case involving allegations by African-American employees that because of their race, they were paid less than similarly situated white employees. Dr. Steward met with company compensation and human resources representatives and then assembled a company-wide data base to replicate the plaintiffs’ experts’ analyses and then developed statistical models to analyze the plaintiffs’ discrimination allegations. His analysis revealed that there was no statistically significant difference in the salary of African-American and white employees.

Dr. Steward’s conclusion that the plaintiffs’ experts’ linear regression models and other statistical analysis were unsound and unreliable was adopted and cited by the Court in its opinion granting the defendant’s motion for summary judgment.
