Econ One Managing Director Jean-Marie van der Elst to Participate in LIDW 2026 Panel

Econ One is pleased to co-host a panel discussion during London International Disputes Week (LIDW) 2026 alongside SOAS and Stewarts.

The session, ā€œWho’s Mine Is It Anyway? Investor Protections, Sovereign Priorities and Sustainability in Africa,ā€ will take place on June 4, 2026, from 14:30–16:00 at the London offices of Stewarts.

The panel will feature perspectives from leading voices from academia, industry, government and international arbitration, including:

  • Emilia Onyema, Professor at SOAS University of London and international arbitrator
  • Daniel Wilmot, International Arbitration Partner at Stewarts
  • Papa Mamadou Fall, Conseil Juridique at the Ministry of Energy, Petroleum and Mines of the Republic of Senegal
  • Philile Mhlongo, Legal Principal at Anglo American
  • Jean-Marie van der Elst, Managing Director and Practice Leader of Econ One’s International Arbitration Group

Across the African continent, mining and natural resources disputes are increasingly shaped by the intersection of sovereign economic priorities, investor protections, sustainability goals, and geopolitical pressures. From fiscal reforms and licensing changes to energy transition initiatives and evolving ESG expectations, these developments continue to reshape the investment and disputes landscape.

This discussion will explore how these issues are influencing risk allocation, renegotiation dynamics, and dispute resolution strategies, while offering practical insights into how States, investors, counsel, and experts are navigating these evolving challenges.

The event will conclude with networking at Stewarts, 5 New Street Square, London EC4A 3BF. Hybrid participation will also be available for virtual attendees.
