India’s Space Sector Delivers a $24 Billion Boost, Drives Job Growth, and Multiplies Economic Impact

Preliminary findings indicate that India’s space sector contributed about $60 billion as value added to India’s Gross Domestic Product from 2014-2023 and $24 billion as tax revenues to the Government. This is according to a study by Econ One and Novaspace that was released on August 23, 2024, at the National Space Day celebrations in New Delhi. The study was initiated by the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO).

The study finds that India’s space sector directly supported 96,000 jobs and for every dollar produced by the space sector, there was a multiplier effect of $2.54 on the Indian economy. In addition, the study finds that India’s space force was 2.5 times more productive than the country’s broader industrial workforce.

These results are consistent with the significant growth and diversification of the Indian space sector which now has 700 companies operating including 200 startups. The largest contributor to the India space economy is satellite communications at 54%, followed by navigation at 26%, and launches at 11%. The study concludes that while India is making great strides in space technology, regulatory reforms and development of the venture capital ecosystem will be crucial for realizing the full potential of the country’s space sector.
